Yesterday, we announced the official launch of La Route du verre. This announcement was made during a press conference where several journalists from the region were present, as well as the mayor of Trois-Rivières, Mr. Jean Lamarche, and the mayor of Shawinigan and president of Enercycle, Mr. Michel Angers.
In collaboration with Enercycle, we have distributed more than 20 containers in various strategic locations in the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec regions in order to allow residents of these areas to deposit clean glass and thus participate in the circular economy.
La Route du verre is also a website (www.larouteduverre.com) that presents a video of the path that glass takes once it arrives at our facilities and an interactive map that allows visitors to locate the nearest drop-off point. It is available only in French.
This project is a logical continuation of other initiatives that have been put in place by Groupe Bellemare to collect glass on a voluntary basis. Examples include the installation of a container for the recovery of glass containers on Boulevard des Récollets, in the parking lot in front of the SAQ Dépôt, and the "EcoByke verre demain" project, a pilot project aimed at recovering empty wine bottles in restaurants in downtown Trois-Rivières during the summer months.
Let’s remember that each year, approximately 250,000 tons of glass are used by Quebec households. Of this amount, a little less than 30% is sent for recycling. Groupe Bellemare’s objective is to maximize glass recovery in order to reach a 90% recycling rate.
